AngloGold Ashanti has entered into an interim arrangement with its service provider, Mining and Building contractors.
This will see their services extended for the next three months after the expiration of their contract on Tuesday.
This follows an agreement between the two parties to continue discussions in an attempt to agree on a new five year contract.
The General Manager in Charge of Public Affairs, John Owusu tells Joy Business this is to ensure that operations at the mines are not disrupted.
“This arrangement we are in putting in place take into consideration the need to arrive at a long term contract between the AGA and MBC. Representatives of the two companies sat together to reach this agreement so in good faith everybody is supposed to do his part to ensure the new agreement is respected,” he said.
A group calling itself “Alliance for the Survival of Obuasi” threatened industrial chaos in Obuasi if AngloGold went ahead to abrogate the contract.
They argued that the economy of the town will collapse as more than 1,300 workers of MBC risk losing jobs.
