Ashanti Regional Executives of the ruling National Democratic Congress are demanding the resignation of the Mayor.
They accuse the KMA boss, Samuel Sarpong of verbal and physical assault of the NDC Regional Chairman, Yaw Obimpeh.
According to the 2nd Vice Chairman of the party, Sawyer Ativor, the Mayor at a meeting accused the regional executives of bribing Assembly Members to initiate an impeachment process against him.
He singled out the Regional Chairman accusing him of leading his impeachment campaign.
Yaw Obimpeh pleaded innocence and swore to invoke the spirit of the gods on him. In his attempt at invocation, the Mayor allegedly attacked him, he stated.
Sawyer Ativor said the Mayor must apologise to the executives or resign his position.
Local Government Minister Samuel Ofosu Ampofo on Thursday headed to the Ashanti Region, hoping to ease tension in the region.
He told Joy News’ Seth Kwame Boateng after a short meeting that they have been able to resolve the problem.
Even though he admitted the Regional Chairman, a key witness in the scuffle had travelled, he said, the Regional Minister has been tasked to resolve the crisis.
He however dismissed allegations that the Mayor physically assaulted the regional chairman.
Samuel Ampofo also pledged to investigate allegations of corruption against District Chief Executives in the region.
The Regional Minister Dr. Kweku Agyemang Mensah later told Joy News the discussion on Thursday was “frank and fruitful.”
He also denied any physical exchange between the Mayor and the Regional Chairman, conceding though that there was a small misunderstanding.
