Arthur Paes, the millionaire by Netherlands standards, accused of allegedly defiling a minor since she was eight years old, is planning to subtly escape from the police through Togo, a neighbouring country, according to intelligence information gathered by the New Crusading Guide.
Arthur Paes is under investigation by the feet-dragging Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer, Inspector Isaac Adai, for allegedly defiling a minor since she was eight years old.
Consequently, the Attorney–General’s (A-G’s) Department under the signature of Madam Gertrude Aikins, has issued a letter directing for him to be arrested, charged and prosecuted but the CID have developed a cold feet.
The last time Paes tried to travel out of the country, insiders say he was stopped at the Kotoka International Airport and warned never to leave the country until investigations are over but he would not budge.
Sources close to the Somey Development Chief have told the paper that they are, and will do all in their power to get Peas travel out of the country freely.
But Abraham K. Bruce, a consultant to the Paes, the owner of the plush Africa Royal Hotel at Nungua, an Accra suburb, has denied the information reacting that, “Why would he run away? The man has nothing to hide. He has cooperated with the police since the case started so why would he run now?”
Meanwhile, a legal expert at the A-G’s department, who pleaded anonymity, told the New Crusading Guide yesterday in reaction to last Friday’s rejoinder by Peas’ consultant that the girl is not a minor that, “That assertion is childish. It is clear in law that when it is established that the victim was not a minor at the time the incident happened then the charge changes to rape so that if Paes is denying that the lady is a minor, at least he has not denied the fact that he had carnal knowledge of the girl without her consent, which makes it rape so, he will be charged for rape.”
But in this particular case, the expert continued, “I have seen the evidence and I know that the girl was a minor so the Bruce guy must be living in his own paradise if he says the victim was not a minor”.
“We are tired of him blaming the wobbling family for his woes. Paes must be prosecuted so that if he has any defence he should go to court and present it. Nobody manufactured the medical repot that established that the girl had been defiled,” the source noted.
The paper however gathered that from next week, some human rights organizations will wage a campaign on Paes, in which they shall call on the security agencies to ensure that he is brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others.
Interestingly, whilst the police are closing in on Arthur Paes to prosecute him, he was last spotted in yesterday’s edition of the Daily Graphic, signing the book of condolence opened for the late President John Evan Atta Mills.
