The Black Stars are without their talisman at SA2010 following an injury in January that ruled Essien out of this summer's tournament.
But rumours are rife among the African media that the Chelsea star may have been jinxed using black magic following a family row.
Meanwhile, Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has declared that his side can still make an impact, with or without Essien.
"We are an all-round team," he said, recalling this year's African Nations Cup which Ghana also played in without Essien.
"Let me take you back to Angola where we lost some players but the team was able to make the final. As a group we are okay but we lost him so we have to concentrate on the future."
