Mr Basil Ahiable, an aspiring independent parliamentary candidate for the Akwatia constituency, has initiated borehole projects in Asuboni and Dugbatsekope, both in the Akwatia area.
Mr Ahiable, Operations Manager (Projects) for Shell in West and Central Africa said the boreholes would soon be completed to relieve the people of the two communities of their acute water problems.
Briefing the GNA at Akwatia after inspecting the projects, Mr Ahiable said he was compelled to contest the parliamentary seat because the area had been neglected for far too long.
He said Akwatia, which used to be a vibrant mining and commercial centre has virtually become a ghost town due to neglect.
The Ghana Consolidated Diamond Company (GCDC), which was the bread basket for the people had become defunct, making life unbearable for the people of the area.
Mr Ahiable said he was approached by friends, relatives as well as well-wishers, who knew his capabilities to contest the election and had no option but to oblige.
On why he decided to contest the seat as an independent candidate, Mr Ahiable, whose mother hailed from the constituency, said the people were discontent with the non performance of both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the area, so they did not want him to associate himself with any of them.
Mr Ahiable said he had provided KVIP toilet for the people of Anwiaso and Takorase, street lights for Dwenase and donated footballs and jerseys to the youths of some of the communities in the constituency.
“I want to make history in Akwatia by restoring the town to its past glory, if the people give me the nod to represent them”, he added.
