The Majority Leader in the fifth Parliament of the fourth Republic is astonished by the New Patriotic Party decision to boycott the inauguration ceremony of President elect John Mahama.
Cletus Avoka told Joy News the NPP decision is unfortunate and he hoped the party will rescind its decision before Monday- the day for the inauguration ceremony.
The opposition party is in court in an attempt to overturn the Election declaration of incumbent President John Mahama as winner of the 2012 elections.
They argue taking part in the inauguration ceremony will compromise their decision to challenge the election results.
After a National Executive Council meeting, the party decided that no member of the NPP will take part in the inauguration.
He said once the party has not taken any step to put an injunction on the inauguration ceremony, it will be so wrong for them to boycott the ceremony.
The boycott will not change the content and attitude of the Supreme Court, he noted.
Cletus Avoka cautioned the NPP not to destroy the democratic image the country has built over the years, adding it will also be a dent on their image if they boycott the ceremony.
He said the same spirit with which the party appointed their leadership in Parliament, they should rescind their decision and be part of the inauguration ceremony.
Avoka would however not say if he will be maintained as the Majority leader of the House.
He would also not talk about who takes over as Speaker of Parliament.
