The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Michael Oquaye has described last Wednesday’s attack on the NPP’s Parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma South, Ursula Owusu, as a big blow to efforts at getting women engaged in active politics.
Prof. Oquaye who is also the Member of Parliament for the Dome-Kwabenya constituency told a news conference in Accra the assault on Ms. Owusu has dented the country’s democratic credentials.
Ursula Owusu was attacked in the Odododiodio constituency by persons alleged to be NDC supporters when she had gone there to encourage traders in the central business district to register in the biometric exercise.
Prof. Oquaye at the news conference criticized police personnel on duty at the Tarzan Registration Centre where the incident happened, for failing to protect the victims.
He said the party has formally reported the incident to the police and has challenged the IGP to arrest the culprits.
