University of Ghana Law lecturer, Prof. Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atuah, claims that the image of the Attorney General's office has been tarnished by a tape released by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking to Evans Mensah on Joy News’ PM Express, Prof. Appiagyei-Atuah explained his stance.
"The AG was allegedly heard on tape trying to influence the third defendant, Richard Jakpa, in the ambulance case involving Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson," he said.
He was "more or less coercing him or finding a way for him to doctor his evidence to nail the defendants and to make him probable for the offence or the charges that have been levelled against him.'"
The NDC is demanding the resignation or dismissal of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Dame, for allegedly violating regulations governing legal practice.
This stems from an allegation made by Richard Jakpa, an accused person standing trial alongside Dr Cassiel Ato Forson for allegedly causing a financial loss of €2.37 million to the state in an ambulance deal.
Mr Jakpa claimed in court that Mr Dame had repeatedly sought his assistance to implicate Dr Forson in the ongoing trial.
At a press conference on Tuesday, NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia played a secret recording of the AG and Jakpa, warning that if the president does not heed their demands, a future NDC government will take action.
Prof. Appiagyei-Atuah expressed his concerns over the content of the tape, particularly noting the suggestion that Jakpa should seek an excused duty to avoid court.
"These are issues that affect the image and credibility of the Attorney General's office. The fact that he's saying ‘I hope I am not being recorded’ tells me that the person has something to hide."
He further stated, "Listening to the tape made me realize that this tape and its contents are not doctored, they are true.
"Then certainly the image of the office has been tarnished. That is why I was proposing that he knows better than we do. He knows the truth."
Prof. Appiagyei-Atuah insists that the Attorney General should not only resign but also render an unqualified apology to the public to restore confidence in the office he occupies.
But at a news conference, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) dismissed calls for the Attorney General to resign.
Frank Davies, Chairman of the NPP’s Legal Committee, said the audio referenced by the NDC has been doctored and is part of a scheme to discredit the AG and get the case against Ato Forson dropped.
