Approximately 10,000 Ghanaians are Australian citizens residing in Australia, Hitz 103.7 has learnt.This was revealed by the Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, William Billy Williams when he passed through the sizzling Daybreak Hitz, on Wednesday 26th January, 2010 with Sakyiama Louis aka Lexis Bill.The visit was part of activities marking the Australia Day.Mr Williams in a festive mood spoke highly of Australia’s history and relationship with Ghana. He said Australia is a rich multicultural nation which has a strong relationship with Ghana based on the fact that they are both Commonwealth nations.He noted Ghana and Australia both practice the British tradition of rule of law and share a lot in common.According to him, the High Commission in Ghana is responsible for Australia's relations with eight other countries in West Africa. The Commission's duties in Ghana include promoting Australia's commercial interests in mining and other sectors of the economy. Australia also supports local community development work including providing clean water, solar power, building clinics and supporting the disabled in various communities in GhanaMr Williams also spoke of Australia's respected educational system which has two of its Universities in the top 50 Universities in the world.He said Australia is looking to attract students from Africa to study there because of the quality of education adding that there are development assistance programs and scholarship packages for Ghanaians to build the capacity of the public sector in Ghana.The High Commissioner also spoke on Australia's tourism sector which he said has great world heritage sites including its great barrier reefs, the Sidney Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and the huge Uluru rock.The High Commissioner expressed his gratitude to Ghana for the cooperation shown him and expressed how fantastic his almost three-year stay here has been.Mr Williams is a father of three, the last of whose birthday coincides with Australia's National Day.He indicated that his work has introduced him to lots of songs from different countries and Ghanaian music especially Hi-life has found its place on his playlist. He commended the choral music tradition in Ghana and lauded the Tema Youth Choir and also indicated that he appreciates the Osibisa band.
He also enjoyed some of his favourite indigenous Australian songs played by the host of the show, Lexis Bill.The Australian High Commissioner, Mr William Billy Williams expressed gratitude to Ghanaians who are friends of Australia adding that Australia would continue to preserve the strong connection the two countries share.Source: Hitz FM/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
