An autopsy conducted on the remains of the late EXOPA Model Agency boss Ibrahim Sima by the 37 Military Hospital reveals that the international model died from acute appendicitis.

The report intercepted by Joy News also indicates that a resultant condition known as Purulent Peritonitis most likely contributed to his death.

Mr Sima died last Thursday while serving a 15-year jail term at the Nsawam Prisons but died at the Police Hospital in Accra after he reported sick.

His family earlier blamed the Police Hospital for his death, accusing them of not giving him the health care he needed.

Medical Director of the Eden Family Hospital, Dr. Andre Kwesi Kumah in explaining the fatality of the two medical conditions are, said appendicitis occurs due to the inflammation of parts of the large intestine when blocked by faecal matter.

According to him, the disease after a while progresses to a stage where it raptures, spreading its contents into the abdomen, causing Purulent Peritonitis - infection and inflammation of the lining of the abdomen.

Dr Kumah said even though a patient could be treated with antibiotics and the problem resolved, in other situations, the patient will need to undergo surgery to remove the appendix.

He explained that a patient could die within a day or two if the disease affects large parts of the abdomen.

In Ibrahim Sima’s case, Dr Kumah said the patient might have died because the disease was not detected early enough or covered by some pain killers making it impossible to detect the severity of the disease leading to his death.

Meanwhile Public Relations Officer of the Nsawam Prisons, Vitalis Aiyeh said the prisons cannot be blamed for the death Mr Sima because the facility lacks the capacity to detect symptoms of the two diseases.

“The prisons infirmary is not very well equipped and there is no resident doctor, we have nurses but they can only work with what they have so beyond first aid, every other case is referred to a hospital.”

He said constant pleas for help to equip the facility have been unsuccessful and that nurses at the facility did the best they could for the deceased.

The convicted CEO died after he complained about chest pains when he collided with a goalkeeper while playing football at the Nsawam Prisons.

Ibrahim Sima was arrested on September 7, 2009 at the Kotoka International Airport when a luggage search revealed tubers of yam embedded with narcotic substances.

Sima denied charges levelled against him and told officials of the Narcotics Control Board, who interrogated him after his arrest that the yams were given to him by one Salifu who resides in Nima, a suburb of Accra, to be given to a friend for a fee of €3000.
