ONE hundred and thirty eight perished through road accidents between January and September, this year, in the Brong-Ahafo Region. Another eight hundred and fifty eight sustained various degrees of injury during the same period under review. Daniel Wuabu, Brong-Ahafo Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), announced this at a durbar on Tuesday to climax this year's road safety week celebration held in Sunyani. He disclosed that during the same period, 474 accidents involved 636 vehicles were reported to the police in the region. According to Mr. Wuaku, there were 128 deaths, involving 463 vehicles during the same period last year of road accident reported to the police. He said that the figures for the past two years were disturbing although there had been slight improvements. He therefore, urged all stakeholders to help curb the situation as most of the accidents could be avoided. The Regional Road Safety Manager added that the NRSC had intensified its educational activities and was in collaboration with the Motor Transport Traffic Unit of the Police and the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority to undertaken joint enforcement operations. He said in addition to the regional office, the NRSC has opened district offices with the aim of bringing road safety education to the doorstep of the public. To promote safer driving in the region, Mr. Wuaku noted that the NRSC has instituted the National Road Safety Awards Scheme. He said five transport unions in the Brong-Ahafo Region namely Intercity State Transport Company, Metro Mass Transit, O.A. Travel and Tours, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union and Progressive Transport Association (PROTOA) have been shortlisted to participate in the competition. Activities lined up for this year's road safety week included, safety education in second cycle schools, road safety video shows, lorry park outreach programmes, mosque visitations and road safety Walk.
