President Mahama has been advised to show commitment to good governance by delaying Mr. Kamara’s appointment as National Security Advisor until he is cleared of bribery allegations which date back to 2009.
The Bekwai MP Joe Osei Wusu says for the President to go ahead with the appointment undercuts his rhetoric on fighting corruption.
“What this means is that, notwithstanding the talks of anti-corruption fighting, good governance, this president is prepared to look good governance [in the face] and slap it, and say damn the consequences. I want him to work for me even if he is corrupt.”
Alhaji Baba Kamara was alleged to have served as a conduit through whom some bribe money got to top government officials in the Rawlings government.
He and two other top government officials were alleged to have benefitted from £750,000 largesse from Mabey & Johnson, a British bridge construction firm that sought to win projects in the country.
The case has grown cold because CHRAJ has failed to bring closure to its investigations since 2009.
However it has not stopped Ghana Integrity Initiative’s Vitus Azeem to lead a growing queue of criticism against Baba Kamara's appointment.
He has accused President Mahama of failing to conduct “due diligence” before appointing the former High Commissioner to Nigeria. For him, the appointment was not “prudent.”
The Bekwai MP fears that Kamara’s promotion from a policy advisor to National Security Advisor puts a security budget into untrustworthy hands.
“The position he is going to hold has an uncontrollable budget. What is the fate of monies entrusted to his charge, if we cannot trust his integrity?” he told Joy News' Parliamentary correspondent, Elton John Brobby.
