What was meant to be a glowing tribute to the late Rt Hon. Peter Ala Adjetey, by the Minority Leader in Parliament Alban Bagbin turned out to be a scathing attack on President Kufour and current Speaker Begyina Sakyi Hughes.
According to the Minority Leader, President Kufuor’s decision not to retain the late Peter Ala Adjetey as the speaker for a second term was a move to keep Parliament in the belly of the executive.
Speaking to Joy FM’s Parliamentary Correspondent on Tuesday, Bagbin said the Late Peter Ala Adjetey was a decisive, assertive and independent minded person who always ensured the independence of parliament.
This Bagbin claimed did not go down well with the President, and therefore master minded his replacement.
The current speaker did not escape criticism from the Minority Leader. According to him, the Rt Hon. Ebenezer Begyina Sakyi Hughes has a diplomatic style of going about business in Parliament which was not effective.
“The absence of Peter Ala Adjetey changed the tempo of the house. The style, the attitude and leadership skills of the Rt Hon Sakyi Hughes are vastly different from that of Rt Hon Peter Ala Adjetey. Ala Adjetey we all know is a firm decisive and courageous leader who speaks his mind without fear or favour. The current speaker is the diplomatic type and therefore his absence has taken away the steam of this house.”
He said the public is gradually losing confidence in parliament because the house is unable to assert itself as an independent institution.
