Two respected legal brains in the country are expected to clash in an atmosphere of learning at the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT, this Thursday, April 10.
Lawyers Ernest Kofi Abotsi and Egbert Faibille Jnr. will be making captivating arguments at the maiden edition of Joy FM Debates on the relevance or otherwise of the Judgment Debt Commission.
The Judgement Debt Commission was set up by President John Mahama under Constitutional Instrument (CI) 79 in November 2012 to enquire into the payment of judgment debts in the country.
Although the Sole Commissioner, Justice Yaw Appau, has said the commission is making a headway in unraveling the ‘mysteries’ surrounding the payments of dubious judgment debts since 1992 till date, many have questioned the commission’s usefulness.
The maiden Joy FM Debate which comes off Thursday, April 10, 2014, pitches two opposing schools of thought against each other in a battle of legal wits and reasoning on the motion ‘Ghana’s Judgment Debt Commission is a waste of public resources’.
Senior attorney at ‘Faibille and Faibille’, Lawyer Isaac Faibelle Jnr will argue for the motion while Dean of the GIMPA Law School, Ernest Kofi Abotsi will argue against the motion.
According to Head of Thought Leadership at Joy FM, Sedem Ofori, “Joy FM Debates present a different edge to debates in Ghana due to the branding and the raised stakes of the intellectual discourse’.
‘It introduces a distinctive approach to debating that emphasizes substance over style and pits speakers against each other in a pound-for-pound manner, such that it will keep debaters on the tips of their toes and participants on the edges of their seats’ He added.
The event comes off at the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT at 6:30 pm, this Thurday, April 10.
Invites are available at the front desk of Joy Fm at Kokomlemle.
