Cofie Bekoe has credited his fine performance with Petrojet for helping him earn his first Black Stars call up.
The 22-year-old midfielder was yesterday named in Milovan Rajevac's 18-man squad for Ghana's August 11 friendly against South Africa at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.
Though having had stints with the junior national teams, a first call up into the Black Stars has really excited the player who says he always knew a possible invitation was going to come his way after meeting the Ghana coach before the World Cup.
“I have always been expecting it [call up]. Milovan Rajevac came over to Egypt to watch a game which my club [Petrojet] lost 3-2. I scored a goal and created another. I felt good as I was aware that I was being watched by the national coach,” Bekoe said following his debut Black Stars call up.
“After, he [Milovan] said I was a nice player and a good one and that I should expect a call. I didn’t expect to be called for the 2010 World Cup but knew I would get a call up for a game in the future.”
Bekoe faces an anxious wait to join his colleagues for the friendly against the Bafana Bafana, but is confident the transition would be smooth.
“I expect it to be a smooth transition. Some were my playing mates at the junior level. But it’s an honour to get the call up into the national team.”
