Ghana’s Black Queens will begin their search for a first winner’s medal in the African Women Championship when they face Algeria in their Group B opener in South Africa later today.
The Queens have on three occasions lost to Nigeria in the finals but the team is hopeful it will have a better story to tell at the end of this year’s competition.
A management member of the Black Queens, Eva Otchere said the team was prepared for the task ahead.
She said history was behind the Ghanaians as far as the African Women Championship is concerned.
“For many years, we, together with Nigeria represented Africa at the World Cup and this is the World Cup qualifier so we do take this [tournament] serious,” she stated.
Meanwhile, Nigeria thumped Mali 5-0 in the other Group A game played yesterday. Defending Champions Equatorial Guinea will also play Cameroon today.
