Bologna stunned last year's Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund as two goals in as many second-half minutes secured their first win in this season's competition.
The Italians looked to be heading out of the competition after Serhou Guirassy's clipped penalty in the first half gave Dortmund the lead.
But Thijs Dallinga equalised midway through the second half when he turned in Jens Odgaard's cross.
Dortmund barely had time to regroup before Bologna got a second that sent their fans wild. Dallinga's strike was denied by Gregor Kobel but on-loan Aston Villa forward Samuel Iling-Junior was there to fire home the rebound.
The win moved Bologna up to 27th in the 36-team league phase of the Champions League.
But defeat for Borussia Dortmund will increase the pressure on coach Nuri Sahin with this their fourth successive loss since returning from their winter break.
Dortmund had lost three Bundesliga games in a row prior to Tuesday, leaving them 10th as reports suggested Sahin could be sacked, external if his side lost to Bologna.
Dortmund were heading third in the table when they were ahead but the loss means they are 14th and now need to get a result against Shakhtar in their final league phase game to have the chance to qualify automatically for the knockouts.
