The Ajumako District Magistrate Court presided over by Mr Kwasi Boakye Emmil, has sentenced Kwasi Essilfie, 18, to a three-month jail term in hard labour for stealing firewood valued at GH¢60.
It belonged to a 74-year-old mason, Opanyin Kwaku Akyerem.
Kwasi Essilfie pleaded guilty but explained that the complainant, Opanyin Akyerem, was his uncle and so he took the firewood to sell for food.
Prosecuting, Inspector Ben Billy Amenuke told the court that on June 5, the complainant and his two sons had gone to their farm to collect foodstuffs when they saw the accused carrying the bundle of firewood.
On seeing them, however, the accused threw the firewood away and took to his heels but the men managed to arrest him after a fierce scuffle.
They handed him over to the Police at Ajumako.
He stated further that the complainant, Opanyin Akyerem, had been experiencing the stealing of foodstuffs and firewood from his farm rampantly over the past months.
