One of Ghana’s enterprising highlife musicians, Brenya, is redefining his sound and craft as he prepares for his new album.
Brenya, now adorned in a mask, has also changed the name of his band, Crispy Nerds to The Spirits of Africa.
He is out with ‘Son of Spirits’, a prelude to his forthcoming album titled ‘Songs from BA’ scheduled for release in September, 2023.
Although Brenya is on a new journey, he says there hasn’t really been a change in his style.
“I have differing sounds. Brenya & The Spirits of Africa only do Highlife and Afrobeat. It is a Highlife and Afrobeat album,” he told myjoyonline.com.

Asked the secret behind the mask, he noted that it is a representation of Brenya & The Spirits o Africa.
“The mask is me being loudly African. There’re other reasons for the mask but those will be revealed in time since it’s all part of the journey,” he explained.
According to the ‘Kelewele’ singer, all the songs on the ‘Song from BA’ album are live productions mainly handled by Peewezel, SenyoCUE and Kofi Strings.

After graduating from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Brenya made a life changing decision to pursue a career in music despite the fact that corporate bodies were knocking on his door to give him employment.
Brenya won two awards with first single ‘Life’. He won the Alternative Gospel Song of the Year and Alternative Gospel Video of the year, from the Ghana Gospel Industry Awards.
Since then he has made great strides with songs such as 'Twene', 'Dam', 'Good Life' and ‘Kelewele’, a highlife song produced by Liquidbeatz and mixed by Peewezel.
He has also done brilliant renditions and covers of popular songs such as Samini's 'Gyae She', Abirekyireba Kofi Sammy's 'Yellow Sisi', among others.
