The Legal and Governance Officer at the Centre for Democratic Development – CDD is asking the police to quickly embrace what he calls democratic policing.
Kojo Asante says the service must move away from traditional methods of policing to conform to modern trends.
He was speaking to Joy News ahead of a lecture on the linkages between policing, security and development in Ghana.
“The police really need to completely reorient; to understand the foundations of democracy and how they can play an effective role in ensuring democratic consolidation.
"Democratic policing really is that the police is there to protect the rule of law. It is a much more broader role. It is more the promotion and protection of our fundamental freedoms.
The lecture is being held later Tuesday at the British Council Hall to launch a new research think tank, the Africa Centre for Development Law and Policy at GIMPA.
