Real Madrid maintained their perfect start in Champions League Group D, when they demolished John Mensah's Lyon 4-0 at the Bernabeu. The Black Stars' skipper was however not part of the Lyon squad that went to Spain.
Karim Benzema haunted his former employers again, tapping in Cristiano Ronaldo’s flick on from a corner in the 19th minute to score his third goal in as many games against Lyon.
Straight after the break Sami Khedira slotted away Benzema’s cut back to make it 2-0 and a Hugo Lloris own goal made it 3-0 following a superb move involving Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain.
Sergio Ramos completed the rout in the closing stages with a left foot volley from a corner.
It could have been much worse for Lyon, who offered very little to provide a contest and appeared to give up as the second goal went in.
Their only notable spell was on the half hour mark when Bafetimbi Gomis had a goal disallowed. The lone striker calmly slotted away Michel Bastos’s threw ball but was rightly flagged offside.
The opening stages were dominated by Madrid, with Ronaldo and Marcelo combining to create sublime one touch football. Benzema also looked hungry and was constantly looking to break the back line and run the channels.
His work paid off after 19 minutes when a Ronaldo flick on from a corner landed at his feet and he coolly slotted away the opener.
That was the Frenchman’s eighth goal in his last eight Champions League games for Madrid and his work was not done there.
Angel Di Maria was chopped down outside Lyon’s box and Xabi Alonso quickly played an intricate pass to Benzema, who duly applied the finish but the goal was disallowed and Alonso was booked for ignoring the referee’s whistle.
Lyon survived until the break but minutes after the restart Jose Mourinho’s side doubled their lead. A slip from Anthony Reveillere played in Benzema on the right of Lyon’s box and he unselfishly cut in and played in Khedira who slotted in from six yards.
Before kick-off Lyon had the worst shooting accuracy across the group stages with a disappointing 24 per cent of shots managing to hit the target and the reasons for that were plain to see. Their lack of creativity and determination culminated in several poor long range efforts and invited pressure from Madrid.
The pressure told on 55 minutes when Marcelo and Benzema combined with some samba football until the striker’s shot was blocked. The rebound fell to Mesut Ozil on the touchline and his fierce cross fell under Lloris and into the net for an own goal and an unassailable lead.
Ronaldo looked to have heaped more misery on Remi Garde’s side but his strike was disallowed when Benzema was deemed to be offside in the build up but did not actually touch the ball.
At this stage Lyon were happy to sit back and soak up the pressure for some damage limitation but Madrid added a fourth on 82 minutes when a Kaka corner fell down to Sergio Ramos who was allowed time to pick his spot and volley past the hapless Lloris.
Madrid cruised through the closing stages and could have added more but Mourinho will be delighted by the football produced tonight by his Galacticos. Nine points already and Madrid look set to qualify from the group as winners.
