There was chaos at the Greater Accra Regional Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) today.
Supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Weija Gbawe constituency besieged the premises.
In the just-ended election, the NPP's Jerry Ahmed Shahid was declared winner but the NDC members would have none of that.
The supporters demanded that their candidate for the constituency be declared the winner of the 2024 parliamentary election.
In a tense standoff, the agitated supporters hurled stones at the EC’s building, vowing not to leave until their demand was met.
Police officers were deployed to the scene and successfully calmed the situation, restoring order to the area.
Debris and other missiles thrown during the standoff can still be seen around the office this evening.
The post-election activities at the constituency did not go without controversy.
For over 48 hours after polls closed, collation was still ongoing.
The NDC members were upset about the delay in determining their fate. They subsequently took over the collation centre and overpowered the police.
It took the intervention of the military to calm tempers at the collation centre.
As the EC was nearing the completion of collating the results, the NDC parliamentary candidate staged a walkout with his supporters, expressing their frustration.
The Commission then declared the NPP candidate, Jerry Ahmed Shahid, winner for that constituency.
