Acting General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party John Boadu says the impeached heads of Ghana’s Electoral Commission brought it upon themselves.

He did not understand how the three, Charlotte Osei, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwaa would have a public spat, laced with accusations and counter-accusations and still expect to sit together as Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission.

“This is a matter that was brought on themselves through accusations and counter-accusations among themselves that triggered workers of the Commission to petition the president. And the process is pretty clear for everyone,” he said.

According to him, the president only exercised his “constitutional mandate” in accepting the recommendation by the Chief Justice committee to sack the three from office for stated “misbehavior and incompetence.”

Shortly after a press conference in Accra, Tuesday, Mr Boadu in an interview with Joy News urged all Ghanaians, particularly members of the opposition National Democratic Congress to be wary of the comments they make in respect of the issue and not to blame the president for it.

He singled out Member of Parliament for Prampram Sam George for condemnation, accusing him of inciting members of his part to rise up against the government.

He also called on the police to be on the lookout for persons who will take the law into their own hands and deal with them.

Last week, the president handed impeachment letters to three of Ghana’s Electoral Commission members after they were found to have engaged in acts of misbehavior and incompetence.

The dismissal was part of recommendations by the Chief Justice Committee set up in accordance with Article 146 of the 1992 constitution.

Per that article the president is mandated to refer to the Chief Justice any petition of stated misbehavior against the EC Chair or heads of other independent state institutions.

The Chief Justice will then constitute a committee to investigate the matter if a prima facie case is determined against the accuser.

After investigating the matter, the committee will issue its report and recommendations which the president shall accept wholly and announce dutifully without any amendment.

A 27-point petition was brought against the EC chair, Charlotte Osei for acts of misconduct. Another set of petitions came up against the two Deputy Commissioners all of which were investigated by the Chief Justice Committee after a prima facie case had been determined.

The committee recommended an impeachment for the three and submitted a report to the president. He accepted the report and announced same.

But the opposition National Democratic Congress has been angered by the decision.

Some of them have threatened mayhem, accusing the president of masterminding the impeachment.

John Boadu insists the president has nothing to do with the impeachment.
