Nana Okofo Twum V, the Chief of Assin Dansame, has given scholarship to 45 brilliant but needy students in the Assin Central Municipality.
This, the Chief believed was the surest way to bridge the growing poverty gap and reduce the inequalities between the rich and the poor by empowering them to create wealth.
Nana Okofo Twum said this at a colourful durbar at Assin Dansame where he out-doored a scholarship scheme and donated educational materials to some selected schools.
Nana Okofo Twum had been paying the school fees and providing other educational materials for the 45 students, four of whom are in the university, 22 in senior high school (SHS) and 19 in junior high schools (JHS).
In Assin North SHS a 60,000 cedis five-bedroom teachers’ bungalow is nearing completion to help ease the accommodation pressure.
The Chief and philanthropist has again refurbished the Information Communication Technology Centre at the Dansame JHS and supplied the Gyase SHS with 10 desktop computers and 50 bags of cement.
The chief used the occasion to announce his monthly cash support of GHC1,000 to the Municipal Education Directorate to effectively monitor and supervise the schools.
Nana Okofo Twum said he was inspired to assist the students to help them obtain the highest level of education to make them contribute their quota to the national development agenda.
He said the donation was the first phase of a programme lined up to support education and appealed to the people in the area to contribute their quota to make the Municipality a centre of academic excellence.
Ms Afi Enyonam Amefuga, the Municipal Education Director, praised him for his kindness and called for increased support towards the provision of quality education in the Municipality.
Dr Kofi Blankson, the Municipal Chief Executive said education was a key priority of the Assembly and that it would continue to put more resources into the development of schools’ infrastructure and create the right conditions for quality teaching and learning.
