The acting Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Anna Bossman has described the alleged vagina search at St Louis Teacher Training College as outmoded and condemned it outright. Speaking to Joy News, Madam Bossman said it is unbelievable that such an act could occur in modern day Ghana. “We do not expect that in 2007 you would have in a teacher training institute such a body search like that to be conducted on female students,” she said. About 600 students of the college alleged that their private parts were searched at the school’s laboratory. The search followed the discovery of a bag of sanitary pads soaked in blood behind the dormitory. Madam Bossman said the authorities took the wrong decision because they are not medical practitioners to ascertain whether someone had committed abortion or otherwise. She said: “Even if they (authorities) didn’t do that, what they did do was in itself a violation of the rights of the students. We are going to investigate it. I believe the students have been advised to bring the matter before us…things like this should not be allowed to happen in 2007.” Madam Bossman said if the students failed to petition CHRAJ it would still go ahead to look into some aspects of the case.
