The Christian Council of Ghana and the Catholic Bishops Conference have assured the nine Supreme Court judges presiding over the election petition hearing of their support. The two Christian institutions have urged the judges to do their work without fear or favour. In a joint communiqué issued on Thursday, the church also called on persons commenting on the case to do so with circumspection. The two institutions also called for support for the Supreme Court to adjudicate the matter fairly and independently. General Secretary of the Christian Council Rev Dr Opuni Frimpong, told Joy News the decisions of the nine Supreme Court judges will have a lot of influence on the future of the country, and urged them be diligent in their task. They also called on the leaderships of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to accept whatever the verdict of the Supreme Court may be. "Citizens of this country should exercise self- restraint in their actions after the verdict of the Supreme Court", they stated. Rev Opuni Frimpong said the unity of the state should be paramount at all time, and urged all to work towards keeping it. “We are a family, we are a nation, and anytime there is anything that threatens [our] sense of unity or cohesion it is a concern to all of us”, he said. The two institutions said they will continue to pray for the peace and development of the country and continue to work with relevant stakeholders in addressing national issues.
