The Commissioner of the National Insurance Commission, Mrs Josephine Amoah says the NIC is not enforcing the law on compulsory insurance of commercial buildings since majority of the public are ignorant of it.
“The fact that the law has said it does not mean that people know it,” she said.
She was speaking on Joy FMs Super Morning Show Wednesday morning.
According to her, the NIC is making efforts to educate and create awareness about the commercial buildings insurance law. Therefore, series of workshops, radio and TV interviews, articles in the dailies, especially in the Business and Financial Times have been done as part of the awareness creation programme.
Mrs Josephine Amoah explained that though her outfit is doing a lot in this direction, a lot more is needed to heighten and sustain such efforts.
“We’ve been able to get some funds from the World Bank, a little bit of money to heighten this,” she said
The commissioner assured that once proper education and awareness creation has been done, people will be inclined to insure commercial buildings but those who refuse will face the rigors of the law.
She added that “In the meantime, we’ve also commissioned the consultancy service to help us come out with the modalities in extensively implementing this. You realize that it has not been easy implementing it, we need to think through it so that we can monitor and employ the position in the law,”
Contrary to claims by an insurance practitioner that the NIC is holding on to funds meant to equip the Ghana National Fire Service, Mrs Annan stressed that “There is no money at the NIC; the law does not require that there should be any money at the NIC.”
