The Upper Manya Constituency conference of National Democratic Congress (NDC) scheduled for September 1, did not come on due to delay in processing of both candidates and delegates listed for the event.
According to information obtained by Ghana News Agency (GNA), as at Monday, the day of the conference, candidates contesting for various positions had not been vetted, while delegates list and ballot papers were not ready.
Speaking to GNA in an interview, Reverend Henry Sackitey, Constituency Chairman said according to the NDC constitution, all delegates have to go through a vetting process for a credible voter register for the conference.
He said, the party is expecting 429 delegates to vote for 40 candidates who are vying for the positions of chairman, vice chairman, organiser, women’s organiser, youth organiser and their deputies.
Rev Sackitey said, the constituency executives have informed the Electoral Commission and the Eastern Regional Head Office of the party in Koforidua of the development.
Mr Jeff Tetteh-Kavianu, Member of Parliament for the Constituency said the situation is disturbing and called for the collaboration of all party executives to work for peace.
He noted that, that it was the second time the elections had been postponed for “such unacceptable reasons”.
He said per the NDC’s constitution, the constituency chairman of the party is the sole organiser of the elections and presides over the process.
He called on the other executives who don’t want the chairman to assume his duties to ensure smooth, free, fair and transparent elections at the conference to step aside and let the party’s constitution work to protect the peace that had existed in the area over the years.
Mr Tetteh-Kavianu expressed the hope that by the close of the week, the delegates list for the conference would be ready.
