Trouble is brewing in the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ejura Sekyedumasi Constituency in the Ashanti region.
Some supporters are threatening to vote against the party if incumbent Member of Parliament, Yusif Pangabu, is fielded for the 2012 elections.
The members of the Coalition of NDC Youth Activists in the area are calling on the national leaders stop him from contesting the upcoming primaries or face their wrath.
Their leader, Peter Aboagye, and the beleaguered MP have been speaking to Luv FM’s Elton John Brobbey.
The leader of the disgruntled NDC supporters said there was deep seated disunity amongst party supporters in the constituency due to the MP’s leadership style.
Mr Aboagye claimed that all candidates for district assembly elections sponsored by the MP lost prompting some members of the party to defect to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He quoted results of a research he claimed was conducted by the NPP which showed that Mr Pangabu was hugely unpopular.
The MP however dismissed the allegations of the group, insisting the press conference was orchestrated by persons wishing to contest the parliamentary primaries but who lacked confidence in their ability make a mark in the elections and were now using Machiavellian tactics by employing faceless people to undermine him.
Responding to the allegations about losses in the assembly elections, Mr Pangabu said, “[In] the district assembly elections we lost some vital seats [but] my brother, do you put this on the MP? District assembly elections, is it partisan? If it is partisan, is it the MP, don’t we have party executives? How do you put this on the MP? If the MP loses an election, that should be a matter to the MP but when we lose an assembly election, how do you put that on the doorsteps of the MP”?
The MP said there was no denying the fact that assembly elections had become partisan and that he did a few things to push the party’s candidates. “We have been doing it here; whether it is lawful or not we do it here; we tried our best but master, it depends on what you have sent to the market which will be bought.”
