Ghanaian highlife artiste Afriyie, formerly of Wutah fame, has called on organisers of music awards schemes to consider creating a category for Artificial Intelligence generated songs, as debates around AI continue to grow within the music industry.

He made the call in a post on his Facebook page on Thursday, January 8, 2026.

“Going forward, I think “music awards” organisers for have a category for ‘AI’ Generated songs. The synthɛ plenty for the system,” he wrote.

The comment has already sparked conversations among entertainment stakeholders and music lovers, with opinions sharply divided on the role of Artificial Intelligence in music creation.

The issue of Artificial Intelligence has become topical in the Ghanaian music space. While some people think AI is diminishing creativity in music, others believe it is the new normal and must be incorporated into musical works the earlier the better.

Globally, the conversation around AI and the arts is also evolving. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, organisers of the Oscars, recently clarified that films made with the assistance of Artificial Intelligence remain eligible for awards, provided human creative control is clearly established. The directive, however, stresses that AI tools must not replace human authorship.

Afriyie’s suggestion raises fresh questions about how Ghana’s music awards schemes will respond to emerging technologies and whether clear guidelines will be introduced to separate human creativity from machine assistance in the years ahead.

The Telecel Ghana Music Awards, for example, is one that keeps making changes in its categories in keeping with changing trends and styles of music. 

Questions have been raised about how the scheme will award in the songwriter category a song that is written by an AI tool. 

As individuals keep creating their own AI artistes, this issue will continue to dominate industry conversations.
