Veteran Actor David Dontoh has paid a glowing tribute to his ex compatriot, actor and playwright Efo Kodjo Mawugbe. In an interview with Hitz FM, David said he would like Efo Mawugbe to be remembered as a pioneer playwright in avant-garde theatre in Ghana. He suggested that an event or festival should be instituted with play writing competitions for the winning plays to be produced with the plays Efo has written. This is to celebrate him as a prominent playwright in the genre of avant-garde theater. He also said that, for the past two decades, Efo has remained the most prolific Ghanaian writer and BBC realized that by giving him two different awards for Radio Theatre play. David further described Efo Kodjo Mawugbe as a meticulous man who was always trying to create new things anytime they were together. He said Efo was a perfect gentleman who respects himself so much that he will not do anything that will make people around him pass negative comments about him. He described him as a hardworking, intelligent and exceptional personality who spoke in a calculated manner and applied himself to his profession with seriousness and commitment. He noted that Efo Kodjo Mawugbe had a very fertile mind and was always coming out with very good ideas due to his commitment towards developing theatre and the two of them virtually shared the same ideas. He said “we were virtually together in so many things and almost everywhere we met, we acknowledged each other by shouting “Charley” … For me Graveyard People as a play was a dramatic point in our relationship as theatre practitioners and friends”, adding that “that was what brought the synergy of ideas that fertilized between us.” Contributions towards the arts and theatre industry According to David Dontoh, Efo has contributed immensely towards the industry. In addition to writing, Efo worked as the Director for the Centre for National Culture in Koforidua, Tarkoradi, Cape Coast and Accra before moving to the National Commission of Culture and eventually became the Director of the National Theatre of Ghana in Accra. He indicated that Efo has left a lasting legacy for all to see adding that everywhere he went, he tried to create theatre groups. In Koforidua, Efo formed the Daasebre Theatre Group that brought up brand new actors and actresses. Efo Mawugbe was the Creative Director of David Dontoh's Kozi Kozi Theatre Group. He also instituted the student Drama Festival called Studafest involving Cape Coast second cycle schools. In Accra he was also instrumental in the activities of the Ghana Union of Theatre Society, the Ghana Actors Guild, NAFAC and almost every activity that involves theatre.
