Political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon Dr. Michael Kpesah-Whyte says President John Mahama’s first major decision will determine how he prioritises certain fundamental values. President John Mahama is yet to name his vice President since he took over power on Tuesday night following the demise of President John Evans Attah Mills earlier that day. President Mahama held his first cabinet meeting on Wednesday at the Castle, Osu, where he led the team in prayer and asked God to turn their adversity into opportunity. Several names have popped up as possible Vice President, including Dr. Kwesi Botchway, who is Ghana’s longest serving Finance and Economic Planning Minister during President Jerry Rawlings’ era. Other names take account of Local Government Minister Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Trade and Industry Minister Hanna Tetteh, Paul Victor Obeng, former head of government business and Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, former flagbearer aspirant of the NDC. Speaking on Joy Fm’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, Dr. Michael Kpesah-Whyte suggested President Mahama should consider one of the older folks being linked to the vacant post. He said, in view of the fact that elections are just five months away, an older folk who has the expertise may be good to partner the President to lead the NDC party to the December polls. He further proposed appointment of younger persons to key positions in the event that the NDC wins the elections, and groom such persons so that one of them could be selected to partner President Mahama should he decide to run for another term in 2016. Dr. Kpesah-Whyte said the vice president should be one “who could be seen as the uniting force within the party”. “He should be able to prosecute the NDC’s campaign in the elections……He should have the ability to deliver the NDC’s ideology and must be someone who the President can trust”, Dr. Kpesah-Whyte recommended.
