Didier Drogba says he is taking legal action after the Daily Mail claimed less than 1% of money raised by his charity went to good causes.
The newspaper said that just £14,115 out of £1.7m donated by sports stars, royalty and businesspeople found its way to help children in Africa.
The ex-Chelsea striker, 38, issued a statement calling the Mail's story "false and defamatory".
The Charity Commission is investigating "serious regulatory concerns".
In his statement, Drogba added: "There is no fraud, no corruption, no mismanagement and no lies."
The Ivorian, who plays for Canadian Major League Soccer club Montreal Impact, accused the Mail journalists of "jeopardising the lives of many thousands of African children".
