The controversy surrounding the election of DCE for Atebubu, Sanja Nanja to represent the ruling NDC in the Atebubu Amanten constituency is far from over as a section of delegates including the former constituency chairman, have vowed to resist any attempt to impose a candidate on the area.
Mr. Sanja Nanja beat sitting MP, Emmanuel Owusu Manu by 19 votes in a controversial primary held on January 28, 2012.
Mr. Owusu Manu was however unhappy with the conduct of the Electoral Officer Mr. Daniel Kwatia, which he described as “unprofessional”.
Mr. Kwatia is alleged to have announced publicly to delegates and observers prior to the elections that he printed 600 ballot papers.
But after voting, the Electoral Officer reportedly declared only 9 ballot papers as unused instead of 68, with 532 votes cast even though 531 Delegates were supposed to vote.
Mr. Owusu Manu who claimed he petitioned the party leadership but did not get a favourable response, then went to a Sunyani High Court which ruled that the results of the polls be nullified for fresh elections to be held.
In spite of the court ruling, the leadership of the NDC says it recognized Mr. Sanja Nanja as the duly elected candidate to represent the party in the area.
This thus prompted former constituency chairman, Alhaji Zakari Dickson and incumbent youth organiser, Abu Braimah as well as a group of delegates, to openly declare Mr. Owusu Manu as a more popular candidate who enjoys much more support from the grassroots as opposed to the elected Sanja Nanja.
They accused constituency executives of flouting the rules by openly declaring support for the DCE.
The group is therefore urging the Brong Ahafo regional branch of the party to go ahead with its plan to organize fresh elections or they will advise themselves.
