Djan’s bombshell on Rawlings and Kufuor

The September, 2010 issue of the AFRICAWATCH, currently on sale has many interesting articles on Ghana, the main one being a nine-page interview with 67-year-old Osahene Boakye Djan. Highlights of the interview include:
  • The current democratic arrangement now cannot allow Jerry John Rawlings to use arms, otherwise he would have removed President Atta Mills by now.
  • My intelligence is that they are preparing to replace President Atta Mills with Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings at the next NDC congress, in a congress coup. There are going to be spoiling tactics in the NDC, in the run-up to 2012 election, which will allow Akufo-Addo a free run to victory. Kufuor would rather that Akufo-Addo doesn't win, and therefore an Asante-backed candidate of his choice, could contest later when Akufo-Addo would have spent his opportunity by age. If Alan had won the NPP presidential primaries, Akufo-Addo and his UNC men would have left the party.
  • Nobody will admit that there is an Asante and Ewe control of Ghana.
An excerpt from the interview is: "Q: Is it why Kufuor appears to be against Akufo-Addo ever becoming president? A: It's not "appears", it's palpable. I mean it's proven! Look, let me ask you a question, why did Kufuor refuse to go on the hustings with Akufo-Addo during the last election, like Rawlings and his wife did for Atta Mills? Q: I wasn't here, so I don't know. A: Kufuor refused to go on the hustings with Akufo-Addo. And I maintain that if Kufuor had even gone around the country just once, one trip, drumming up support for Akufo-Addo, he will be president of the country today, because Akufo-Addo missed winning outright on the first ballot by a whisker, you understand! So Kufuor will have to answer why he did that; and I am not saying it, it is such an objective fact that leads people on the ground to develop and hang on to such perception. That Kufuor is an Asante and Akufo-Addo is an Akyem; Kufuor should have known that his omission would be subjected to such analysis and interpretation. In this irrational contest for office and power in Ghana, people are bound to come to irrational conclusions, and in this case he gave the cause for it." Source: Daily Dispatch/Ghana
