The President of the Catholic Bishop Conference, Most Rev. Bishop Osei Bonsu has asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to do the best if Ghana wants to go the biometric way.
According to him, biometric without verification will not be the best so the EC together with all the stakeholders of elections in Ghana must ensure that the best comes out of the biometric voter exercise.
“If we do not want biometric that is fine with us but if we want to use biometric then nothing but the best must be ensured” he stressed.
The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference (GCBC) is supporting calls for a verification mechanism in the biometric registration for the 2012 General Election.
In a communiqué issued by the conference at the end of its five-day Annual Plenary Assembly in Takoradi, and read by the President of the GCBC, Most Reverend Joseph Osei-Bonsu said if there will biometric then electronic verification should be included.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s current affairs Ekosii-Sen on Monday, Most Reverend Joseph Osei-Bonsu asserted that the EC has been inconsistent with their explanation as to why they excluded electronic verification in the biometric voter exercise.
“On one breath the EC is talking about additional cost if there should be verification and other times [it is the] possible breakdown of the system. So which is which, the EC should let us know in order to resolve it ones and for all,” the priest said.
He tasked the Electoral Commission to ensure they get all the mechanisms that will authenticate the identity of the voter.
“A system that will ensure the voter does not vote more than once must be readily made available” he said.
He hinted that the Catholic Bishop Conference will meet the EC to look at their concerns with the electronic verification.” If we meet them and it is financial then foreign donors will be sought but if it is otherwise then we will take it from there”.
The president of the catholic bishop conference called on all political parties to help get a clean voters register and stop engaging in a pull-him-down attitude.
“If a person can register and cannot authenticate that he or she has registered then why do we do it at all” he said.
