Three doctors are being investigated for alleged negligent homicide after the death of Italian footballer Piermario Morosini during a Serie B game last April, according to media reports on Monday.
Livorno midfielder Morosini, on loan from Serie A side Udinese, collapsed on the pitch after suffering a heart attack during a second division game on April 14 at Pescara and was later pronounced dead in hospital.
Doctors Ernesto Sabatini (Pescara), Manlio Porcellini (Livorno) and Vito Molfese of the emergency services are being probed into their actions while treating the 25-year-old.
Morosini suffered from a cardiomyopathy, or a rare genetic heart muscle condition, according to the 250-page report into his death by Professor Cristian D'Ovidio.
Emergency services had however been critised for not using a defibrillator in an attempt to revive the player, with the ambulance delayed because of a security car parked in front of the emergency exit.
It continued a tragic family history that saw Morosini's parents die while he was a teenager, after which his disabled brother also committed suicide.
He is survived by an older sister, who is handicapped.
