Dr. Kwabena Adjei bemoans NDC wrangling

National Democratic Congress chairman, Dr. Kwabena Adjei is warning off persons he says are trying to rock the boat for the ruling party for personal causes. He said the agenda of such persons is to persist in criticizing President J.E.A. Mills with a view to making him unpopular so they would exploit the situation to pursue their own agenda of coming to power. However, he said those people will not succeed. “Some people are trying to rock the boat, and it is time for us to tell them that we can’t continue to sit down and then see them rock the boat. There is nothing wrong with President Mills. President Mills is not ill. President Mills is doing what he can do to promote the better Ghana agenda. That’s it! And people want to rock the boat because they have their own agenda. The likes of me have sat down, we have not talked about anything, we have watched events, we are worried. We are worried, because this is coming from within our own ranks and from the highest echelons of our ranks…”, Dr. Kwabena Adjei told Citi FM Wednesday night. Asked who those seeking to rock the boat for the NDC are, Dr. Adjei, who says he has spent no less than 23 years in the party from its Provisional National Defence Council beginnings, shot back: “… Don’t you know what is happening all the time, people are trying to say this – he [President Mills] is slow, he is Team B, he has Team B, he has this and that, don’t you know?” “They are our own ranks. We don’t want to talk about it because if you talk about it, you know your press will take it up and then make sure that our party is finished. So we don’t want to talk about it, but it has come to a point when we now want to tell those people that if Prof Mills doesn’t succeed, nobody will succeed, nobody! It should be very clear to them. If people want to make sure that they undermine Professor Atta Mills so that they will come to power, they lie…” The ruling party has not sat easy since last Friday, June 4 celebration in Tamale of the 31 anniversary of the June 4, 1979 uprising led by ex-president Jerry Rawlings, at which event a group showed up bearing a banner that proclaimed Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings as a likely interest for the party’s flag-bearer for 2012. The former First Lady has not spoken about any such intentions, at least publicly, while persons close to her have cleared her fit for the presidency if she so chooses and to do so on the ticket of the NDC. Kofi Adams, spokesperson for former President Jerry Rawlings and Herbert Mensah, football administrator and businessman, have both spoken positively of Nana Konadu’s mettle, and suggested she more than qualifies to contest if that is her interest. However persons close to President Mills have shot back at the suggestions, calling them divisive and unproductive. Herbert Mensah has personally taken on Nii Lantey Vanderpuije, a presidential aide, and NDC bigwig Ato Ahwoi, for what he says are unreasonable pontifications at his person following his comments on the “Konadu for President” banners, widely publicized on Monday by the Ghanaian media. But Kwabena Adjei, who fell just short of mentioning the former first couple’s names, said should the top men of any party continue to criticize the leader and president of the party, “and cast aspersions on his spouse and everything, that party doesn’t have the likelihood of surviving.” Asked the specific question of whether he thought the former first family was causing problems for the party, Dr. Kwabena Adjei said “You want to put words in my mouth. Don’t you yourself know what is happening? Don’t you know what is happening? Heh do you want me to say it? Don’t you know what is happening? I mean we are fed up with happening right now. I have been with this party whether PNDC or NDC for 23 years. I also sacrificed my youth. I have nowhere to go. I belong to the NDC and I have been looking at the development of what is happening with disquiet…” On Wednesday regional chairmen of the party called on President Mills at the Castle to reassure him of their support, and according to Dr. Kwabena Adjei, anyone who thinks the president is worried about the developments in the party could be underestimating him and taking him for granted. “No, …some of you people you take the man for granted. A professor of law who has been a vice president before and is the President of the Republic of Ghana, why do you people think you can underestimate a man like that. A sportsman like that? His demeanor is cool. He’s not worried about all this nonsenses that are going on, he’s not.” Story by Isaac Yeboah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
