Police in the Central Region have arrested a driver of a Ford vehicle whose reckless driving allegedly led to a motor accident which led to the death of fourteen people on the Apam Junction-Winneba Highway on Sunday.
Police say Francis Donkor, 42, the driver of the Ford Bus with registration CR 1292-11 who ply between Accra and Cape Coast overtook some vehicles and landed in front of the Articulated truck which was travelling from Accra to Mankessim.
The Driver of the articulated truck, in an attempt to avoid hitting the rear of the Ford bus, veered off into the lane of the oncoming Sprinter Bus with registration GM 1129-16 resulting in a head-on collision.
Fourteen people, 12 females and two males, died on the spot as a result.
Eleven people are also in critical condition at the Apam and Winneba Government Hospitals where the bodies of the victims have been deposited.
Though the Driver of the Ford bus escaped from the scene of the accident which occurred at exactly 4: 15 p.m at Gomoa Mprumeim, he was later arrested at Mowire Junction.
The Ford bus has also been impounded.
Staff Officer at the MTTD, DSP Emmanuel Adu Boahene, who confirmed the arrest says police have launched investigations into the accident.
According to him, the driver is being held for careless and inconsiderate driving.
