Driver remanded for causing harm to girlfriend

A 51-year-old driver has been remanded into prison custody by a Kumasi Circuit Court for allegedly harming his girlfriend. Augustine Amankwa is said to have hit the lady with a drinking glass, opening a deep cut near her right eye. He denied the offence and would re-appear on Monday, February 7. Police Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour-Kyei told the court presided over by Mr Justice Emmanuel Amoh-Yartey that the complainant, 37-year old Afia Owusuaa, is a trader and resided at Fankyenebra, while the accused lived at Atimatim. They have been in a relationship for one year. Amankwa promised to marry Owusuaa and invited her to join him at Atimatim, which she did. After living under the same roof for sometime there was a misunderstanding between the two as the accused secretly parked his personal belongings and disappeared from the house. The Prosecution said Owusuaa also decided to remove the remaining items in the room - a bed, mattress and two chairs, to stay with a friend in a different house at Atimatim. On September 1, last year, at about 20:00 hours, the accused traced Owusuaa to her new place and demanded that she returned the items she took away from his room. This generated a quarrel during which Amankwa picked a drinking glass and hit her with it. Owusuaa bled profusely and some people rushed her to the Tafo Government Hospital. A formal report was made to the Police Domestic Violence and Victims' Support Unit (DOVVSU) and the accused was arrested. Source: GNA
