The chairman of the Steering Committee on Urban Transport Project, Dr. Alfred Vanderpuije has warned commercial drivers to comply with the introduction of new vehicle stickers as the Urban Transport Project is expected to begin soon.
Speaking to JoyNews, Dr. Vanderpuije said the drivers are given up to the end of March 2014, to comply with the directive as issuance of the new colour stickers commences this month by all 13 district assemblies in the Greater Accra region.
According to him, the issuance of the stickers will be upon completion of permit renewal formalities by drivers, adding that the stickers are for identification purposes as full implementation of the Urban Transport Project takes off soon.
Under the programme, 'tro-tros' operating in the region shall be identified by blue stickers, while red stickers will be used to identify taxis.
However, the announcement has infuriated some commercial drivers in Accra, who have vowed to resist the introduction of the new vehicle stickers, complaining that they are already paying too much for their operations.
Meanwhile, the committee has confirmed it will begin the Bus rapid Transit system on first July on the Amasaman-Central Business District corridor.
