The Beverage Consumers and Bar Owners Association of Ghana, popularly known as the Drunkards Association of Ghana, has announced a one-week break from alcohol consumption to honour the memory of recently deceased statesmen, prominent musicians, pastors, and other notable personalities.
In a statement signed by its president, Moses Onyah, the association said the decision, which takes effect from November 10 to 17, 2025, is meant to allow its estimated 16.7 million members to reflect on their lives and undergo medical screening to ensure their well-being.
The association noted that the recent string of deaths had placed members in “a state of mourning,” which had ironically led to a rise in alcohol consumption among its members.
The leadership has, therefore, imposed a temporary halt to drinking activities to encourage self-care and reflection.
“We’re also entreating all members to use this period to engage their respective religious leaders to pray for the nation, the President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, and leaders of the association,” the statement said.
The association further urged members to be cautious and ensure that all beverages consumed, especially during the upcoming Christmas and New Year festivities, are duly approved by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).
It also expressed appreciation to bar owners across the country for adhering to the association’s directives and promoting responsible drinking.
Additionally, the group appealed to the government to provide reflective clothing to enhance the visibility and safety of its members at night.
