About 60 livestock farmers in the East Mamprusi District, have been given 600 locally bred sheep, known as "Jalongky" to rear as part of a national credit scheme to boost meat production.
Mr. Imoro Adams, District Chief Executive (DCE) told the Ghana News Agency that the "credit in kind policy" is a pilot project that seeks to sustain the vegetation and reverse the country's meat deficit.
He said East Mamprusi was part of the 35 districts selected for the pilot project. Beneficiary farmers are supposed to pass on the same quantity of animals they receive to their colleagues after two years without any interest attached.
Mr. Adams said the farmers were given training in animal husbandry by agriculture extension and veterinary officers, to enable them to take good care of the animals.
The DCE noted that the policy is cost effective and could reduce poverty.
