The head of KNUST Counselling Center (KCC), Mrs. Victoria De-Graft Adjei, wants special attention paid to the mental health of young adults.
She has observed that emotional challenges make young people vulnerable to suicidal tendencies.
Speaking at the counselling and emotional awareness week celebration, Mrs. Adjei touched on the need for young people to be educated on depression management.
“We know that they go through a lot and for the challenges, they get anxious and depression sets in.
“These young ones are thinking of committing suicide and some are even successful in going through suicide. We think they shouldn’t have that.
“They need to know what causes depression with respect to their relationships and how it affects them and how they can overcome the signs and symptoms when they see it,” she said.
The KNUST Counselling Centre organizes an emotional awareness week every year for young adults particularly high school students on emotional and relationship management as well as career choices.
Kumasi Wesley Girls, Ejisuman, St Louis, Kumasi High and Kumasi Academy were participants in this year’s event.
A student of St Louis Senior High School, Ayinsone Salome Ayinboah shared her thoughts on the event with JoyNews.
“We were taught ways of choosing our career paths to match the courses we will be doing at the tertiary level.
“We were also taught as young adults on how to control our emotions,“ she said.
A student of Kumasi high, Johnson Glenmore added that: “This programme is a very nice and educative one. We have learnt about the aggregate to get to offer certain courses in KNUST".
A teacher at Kumasi Wesley Girls Ms. Elizabeth Boatemaa proposed that the programme should be sustained.
She also applauded the facilitators for their presentations.
“I am so impressed about the outcome of the programme. I will suggest that it should be a continuous one because the delivery and presentations of the facilitators is very useful”
Participants were given certificates.
