The Environmental Protection Agency has began the implementation of a waste segregation program to improve waste management in the country.
Under a pilot scheme some institutions and schools have received specific coloured waste bins to separate solid waste like paper, bottles and food at source and pursue actions to make the environment sustainable.
Executive Director of the Environment Protection Agency, Daniel Amlalo says the program will improve management of some 13 thousand tonnes of solid waste generated daily.
“…out of this quantum of waste generated only 60 percent is collected and in effect safe disposal of waste presents a major challenge …”
To encourage recycling and improve solid waste disposal in the country, the Environmental Protection Agency has partnered JEKORA ventures which donated 50 bins to ministries and schools.
Five senior high schools, Sacred heart Institute, Holy Trinity Cathedral Senior high, Presbyterian High School Osu, Kinbu Senior High Technical School and Labone Senior high school were beneficiaries of the bins.
Chief executive of JEKORA Ventures, Nartey Tokoli believes the project will be successful when introduced to homes.
“ We are convinced that waste segregation at the source of generation is the way to go to in order to guarantee the delivery of high quality recyclable raw material to industry create job openings for the teeming youth…. promotion of recycling activity will reduce the current pressure on land filing and mitigate the negative impact that green house gasses discharged from land filing have on climate change”.
At the program launch today, the EPA mounted and exhibition to show how plastic products can be recycled.
The EPA in collaboration with waste management companies like Jekora Ventures, Zoomlion Ghana ltd and Universal Plastics Products Recycling will roll out an education campaign for residential clients to ensure the waste segregation program is a success.
