A Security expert, Adib Sani, has called for an examination of the police recruitment process in the country.
This comes after the Police Service revealed that its preliminary investigations have established the involvement of two of its officers in some of the cases of bullion van attacks.
In a statement on Monday signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, disclosed that they have made a breakthrough in the investigations into the multiple bullion van robberies in the Greater Accra Region.
Mr Sani, speaking in an interview on The Pulse on Tuesday, said he holds the belief that the occurrence of police involvement in criminal activities can be viewed from two perspectives.
In his view, there could be the possibility that the police officer involved is “either a criminal recruited in the police service or perhaps he got compromised on the way.”
He also inquired how background checks are conducted during the police recruitment process.
Before an officer is recruited into service, the security expert said there should be a thorough background check on the individuals.
“Take a closer look at the processes involved in the police recruitment procedure. The first is the completion of the police application form, and then you will attend an assessment centre, after that, you will go for an exam and of course an interview and undergo medical and fitness test then the most important part of the bit which is the background check is also done. So the question is, what extent do we check the backgrounds of these individuals?”
This, he explained, is because other jurisdictions conduct a full background check before hiring.
“They check to see if you have ever been convicted of any felony if you’ve engaged in any serious misdemeanour If you are into drug use or past drug use. If you were dishonourably discharged from the military or any other security service, if you have a bad credit history etc.,” he listed
