The family of rampaging killer Raoul Moat held a moonlit vigil at the spot where he died to mark the anniversary of his death.
Flowers and accompanying cards were left at the place where Moat, 37, turned his gun on himself following a week-long manhunt after he shot dead his ex-lovers new boyfriend and blinded a policeman.
One tribute read: 'Omnes hore vulnerant' - Latin for 'Every passing hour wounds; the last hour kills'.
The family also placed an open letter to the residents of Rothbury, Northumberland, who found themselves at the centre of a seige watched by millions around the country.
It urged residents to 'understand their intentions' as they remembered Moat, who they claimed was 'not the man we know and loved' when he went on his murderous spree.
Speaking shortly before the anniversary of his brother's death, Angus Moat said: 'I have a basic human right to mourn my brother.
'I love Rothbury, and for me it is always going to be a place where I feel closest to Raoul but it's also always going to be a bittersweet place for me.
But residents hit hit out at the friends and family for visiting the place where he died in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Pensioner Margaret Chandler, 80, whose house on Station Road in Rothbury overlooks the river where the gunman executed himself, believes his relatives should have stayed away.
She said: 'I heard a commotion in the middle of the night, there was a lot of noise and people were shouting.
'It was obviously something to do with Raoul Moat, Rothbury has been thick with talk of his anniversary all week.
'I did not realise Moat's family and friends had come down but I think they should have stayed away.
'That man did a terrible thing and now his relatives are living off his glory, I don't think its right.
'The letter is moving and upsetting but it should not have been left there. It is disrespectful to the residents of Rothbury, when we just want to put everything behind us.'
Ann Hornsby is the grandmother of Raoul Moat's ex-girlfriend 22-year-old Samantha Stobbart whose lover Chris Brown was shot dead by the gunman.
The 70-year-old said: 'I had an incling somebody would do something this week, especially his friends.
'They were all so het up about it when he shot himself, and I can understand that, but it is finished now. It is over.
'His family and friends should stay away and just let him rest in peace
'If they had to leave tributes to Moat then they should have gone to the crematorium like everybody else, why do they have to visit the place where he died?'
Moat sparked a huge manhunt last year after shooting his ex-girlfriend Sam Stobbart, 22, in Birtley, Gateshead, and killing her boyfriend Chris Brown, 29. He also blasted unarmed 42-year-old police officer David Rathband in the face, leaving him blind.
On July 10, following a tense six-hour stand-off with police marksmen in Rothbury, Moat shot himself in the head with a sawn-off shotgun.
In March this year, Karl Ness, 26, one of Moat’s henchmen, was jailed for 40 years for helping the killer during his week-long shooting spree.
Another, Qhuram Awan, 23, was ordered to serve at least 20 years.
The pair helped the steroid-addicted former bouncer carry out his murderous rampage.
