Rio Ferdinand’s long anticipated reunion with Harry Redknapp at Queens Park Rangers is edging ever closer to actuality, reports the Daily Mail. However, despite speculation that the former Manchester United man could be given the armband at Rangers, the latest indications are that he will not be made captain.
Ferdinand parted company with Manchester United this summer, having been a part of the club for some of its most historic successes. Despite being linked with various moves outside of England, Ferdinand was thought to be keener on a switch within the Premier League, and has been heavily linked with QPR for some time.
Should he join the Hoops then he is expected to take a dramatic wage cut from the weekly pay packet he had been receiving at Old Trafford, which made him one of the best paid footballers in the world. A move to Loftus Road will also represent a reunion with Redknapp, a manager who first gave Ferdinand his chance as a schoolboy at West Ham.
However, despite the relationship already enjoyed between the pair, the Mail suggests that Ferdinand will not be made Redknapp’s on-field leader. Clint Hill is the current captain at QPR, and the honour is not about to be taken away from him. Should Ferdinand complete his move to the London club then he should stand to receive first-team opportunities, but he will not be granted a comparable level of leadership to that which he sometimes enjoyed at United.
