Final year students of the St. Paul’s Senior High School at Denu in the Volta Region have returned to school after two weeks closure to resume preparations for their West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).

There is heavy un-uniformed security presence at the school as authorities roll out measures to prevent re-occurrence of the rioting following allegations of a homosexual act between two of the students.

Headmaster of the school Francis Hlogbey in an interview with Joy News said the students' study time will be increased to ensure they catch up with what they lost in the two weeks that the school was closed.

“We are almost always ready; we have already got our plan so that if the students come back…even if it is Saturday and Sunday – provided they have agreed, we can do our best for them to make up the lost time”.

The students who were alleged to have engaged in the act, according to Mr Hlogbey, have also been allowed to return to school because there is no evidence to prove what they did.

“Homosexuality is a criminal offence but there is no evidence now to prove beyond all reasonable doubt that these boys have engaged in it. So the boys are still coming on campus and the matter is with the police, if they find out and they know that it is true the laws of Ghana will rule and rule properly”.

Two male students of the school were arrested by the police on February 7, 2015 for engaging in homosexual acts.

Shots fired by the police in an attempt to restore calm at the school; after rioting by students who demanded the handing over of two male suspected homosexuals, struck the head of a final year student, who was been confirmed dead.
