The Agona West Municipal Fire Commander, Ebenezer Mensah says the management of the Agona Swedru branch of Melcom, which was razed by fire Saturday night, have some questions to answer over the validity of their fire certificate.
The Agona Swedru branch of Melcom was consumed by a fire which is purported to have been caused by an electrical fault. It took a team of firemen from Apam, Breman Asikuma, Budumburam and Kasoa divisions of the Ghana Fire Service over eight hours, to bring the fire under control.
Having subdued the fire, the Agona West Municipal Fire Commander told Joy News his outfit has begun investigations into the incident revealing that their preliminary findings indicate that Melcom’s fire certificate could have expired as at the time of the incident.
Mr. Mensah said the Melcom management have been invited to assist in the investigations into the cause of Saturday night incident.
Joy FM’s Central regional correspondent, Richard Kwadwo Nyarko who was at the scene said the Melcom shop had just taken stock of wares for the Yuletide when the disaster struck.
He added that the fire which started around 2100hrs destroyed everything in the mall. He added that the timely intervention of the firemen prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining structures.
Kwadwo Nyarko added that the incident occurred after the shop had closed for the day. No casualty was recorded, he stated.
